"Sumisui Fireworks 2026 ~A Summer Cooling with Water and Light~" will be held.

Sumida Aquarium (Location: Sumida-ku, Tokyo; General Manager: Kawasumi Rui) is pleased to announce that it will be holding "Sumisui Fireworks 2026 ~A Summer Cooling Off with Water and Light~" from Tuesday, July 14th to Monday, September 14th, 2026.

This event is a limited-time summer event that combines traditional Japanese summer traditions such as "fireworks," "wind chimes," and "goldfish" with the unique charm of an aquarium, such as "water" and "animals."

During the event, the ceiling of the " penguins Pool," where the Magellanic penguins live, will be illuminated with two different projection mapping displays, one for daytime and one for nighttime. During the day, the goldfish exhibited in the " Edo-rium" will appear to swim from their tanks towards the ceiling, showcasing the graceful beauty of these fish. At night, the ceiling will transform into a fantastical starry sky, with the animals that live at our aquarium appearing one after another as constellations. The constellations will eventually turn into fireworks, and in the grand finale, all seven animals will gather together, brilliantly illuminating the summer night sky. Enjoy an experience that feels like watching fireworks together with the Magellanic penguins, thanks to our unique projection mapping that uses light to express the habits and movements of the creatures.

Additionally, a corridor lined with 100 jellyfish - themed wind chimes will appear on the staircase leading down from the 6th to the 5th floor of the building. This space, surrounded by the refreshing jellyfish wind chimes, is also a perfect photo spot for capturing summer memories.

At "Edo-rium," panels will introduce the goldfish culture of the Edo period, along with the charm of the goldfish on display. In addition, the museum shop will be selling a limited number of jellyfish wind chimes ahead of the event, and the Penguin Café will be offering a limited summer menu.

During the summer vacation season, from July 27th (Monday) to August 31st (Monday), we will extend our opening hours. Enjoy the ever-changing charm of Sumida Aquarium in a cool and relaxed atmosphere.

The Sumida River Fireworks Festival, a quintessential summer event in Sumida Ward, Tokyo, is said to be the oldest fireworks festival in Japan*1. The culture of fireworks and enjoying the cool evening air, which has continued since the Edo period, has been passed down to the present day, along with the custom of appreciating goldfish. This event incorporates this Edo-era summer atmosphere while offering a summer experience that can only be enjoyed at an aquarium. From ceiling projection mapping that changes its appearance between day and night, to a corridor lined with 100 jellyfish wind chimes, and exhibits that allow you to enjoy beautiful goldfish not only in tanks but also from above*2, you can enjoy a summer experience unique to Sumida Aquarium.

Furthermore, during the summer vacation season from July 27th (Monday) to August 31st (Monday), we will extend our regular operating hours, allowing you to enjoy the unique nocturnal views of the animals and the different charms of the aquarium depending on the time of day. 1. "Sumisui Fireworks 2026 ~A Summer Cooling with Water and Light~" Main Contents

(1) Ceiling effects using projection mapping

The ceiling of the open-air pool where the Magellanic penguins spend their time will feature projection mapping displays that differ during the day and night. Additionally, on the 6th floor of the facility, there will be an area designed to resemble a box seat (*3) where visitors can enjoy the ceiling displays while observing two types of goldfish, "Ranchu" and "Ryukin," from above.

*3 Special viewing seats set up at theaters, sumo arenas, fireworks displays, etc., which are higher than regular seats and prioritize comfort and a sense of exclusivity.

• Daytime performance details

Adjacent to the penguins pool on the 5th floor is "Edo-rium," which exhibits goldfish that have been cherished since the Edo period. The goldfish swimming in the tank are presented in a way that makes it seem as if they are swimming out of the tank and towards the ceiling, offering a unique way to enjoy goldfish viewing while experiencing Edo-period goldfish culture.

Additionally, on the 6th floor, goldfish will be displayed in bowls, and seating areas will be set up for viewing them from above. You can enjoy this in conjunction with the goldfish display on the ceiling.

 ・Details of the nighttime fireworks display

The daytime goldfish show gives way to a fantastical starry sky projected onto the ceiling. The stars then transform into constellations representing the animals that live at Sumida Aquarium, appearing one after another, before evolving into fireworks that light up the summer night sky. For the grand finale, all seven species of animals illuminate the night sky. This unique projection mapping show uses light to represent the habits and movements of the animals, creating a special summer experience where you can enjoy watching fireworks alongside the Magellanic penguins living under the projection mapping.

① Spotted garden eel

The artwork depicts their social behavior, their habit of gobbling up food that falls to them, and their tendency to burrow into holes.

② Moon jelly

This artwork depicts the growth process of jellyfish as they change their appearance as they grow. The jellyfish larvae, ephyra, spread across the night sky, eventually becoming Moon jelly, and finally transforming into a magnificent fireworks display.

③ Magellanic penguins

The image depicts a flock of birds swimming leisurely against the night sky. In the center of the circle are the four baby birds born this spring, celebrating their arrival.

④ Goldfish (Ryukin)

The fish's distinctive large tail fin moves gracefully, depicting its elegant swimming motion. As it swims slowly, its scales reflect light, shimmering beautifully and transforming into a fireworks display.

⑤ White tiger

The image depicts the sand tiger shark swimming with its mouth slightly open and preying on schools of small fish. The shark itself is also glowing as it swims leisurely.

⑥ Green sea turtle

This artwork is inspired by the egg-laying behavior of green sea turtles. The way the eggs burst one after another and the baby turtles spread out like fireworks represents their journey to the sea.

⑦ South American fur seal

It depicts the streamlined shape of the fish and how it swims as if flying through the water. The graceful trajectory of its swimming is drawn with light, transforming into a spectacular fireworks display.

(2) A corridor lined with 100 jellyfish wind chimes

The staircase leading down from the 6th to the 5th floor is decorated with 100 jellyfish-shaped wind chimes, creating a fantastical corridor-like space. Stepping inside, you'll feel as if you're floating in the ocean alongside the gently drifting jellyfish. Enjoy this cool, summery photo spot. In addition, the museum shop on the 5th floor will be selling a limited quantity of jellyfish wind chimes starting July 1st (Wednesday), ahead of the event.

(3) Panels introduce the Edo period's summer culture and the charm of goldfish.

The "Edo-rium" on the 5th floor is a goldfish exhibition area stretching approximately 100 meters in length. In this space adorned with fantastical decorations that evoke a sense of Japanese aesthetics, you can see about 15 varieties of goldfish, including Wakin, Ryukin, and Ranchu. In addition to side-view displays in acrylic tanks, the exhibition also features displays that allow you to enjoy viewing goldfish from above, a method of appreciation popular in the Edo period. During the event period, panels will introduce Edo's summer culture by combining the charm of goldfish with summer scenes depicted in Ukiyo-e prints. Enjoy a space where you can feel the atmosphere of Edo's summer and the coolness unique to an aquarium while gazing at beautiful goldfish.

2. Selling jellyfish shaped wind chimes ahead of the event.

Prior to the event, we are selling a limited quantity of "jellyfish Wind Chimes" made by TAKU GLASS, a glass specialty shop in Niigata Prefecture whose products are also used in the interior decorations of the venue. Each wind chime is handcrafted by artisans, so each one has a unique shape and color. We have prepared four colors: Cotton Candy (translucent white), Polka Dot (clear blue), Ramune (light blue), and Fireworks (colorful dots). Enjoy a summery moment at home with the refreshing beauty of the glass and its gentle sound.
