Notice of the death of Magellanic penguins"Susuki"

On Monday, June 8, 2026, "Susuki," a Magellanic penguins, passed away.

Until around 2 PM that day, no abnormalities were observed in the penguin's condition, and it was seen swimming in the penguins pool, feeding, and coming ashore on the rocks, exhibiting normal behavior. An abnormality was noticed around 3 PM, and treatment was immediately administered in the back area, but death was confirmed at 3:17 PM. The exact cause of death will be investigated in cooperation with specialized institutions.

"Susuki" had lived at Sumida Aquarium since its opening in 2012. She was a distinctive penguins with many spots on her belly, making her easily recognizable even when swimming underwater. When she was resting on land, she resembled a mayonnaise bottle, and her adorable appearance made her a favorite among many visitors.

Susuki was especially close to Sour, with whom she had been paired for many years. Their affectionate relationship was memorable; they would snuggle up to each other when sleeping and call out to each other if they were even slightly separated. Susuki, with her gentle personality, was also beloved by the animal care staff.
