Sumida Aquarium (Location: Sumida-ku, Tokyo; General Manager: Rui Kawasumi) is pleased to announce that a Magellanic penguins chick was born on Friday, April 24, 2026, and has been named "Jinbei". Following last year's birth, the total number of penguins born at Sumida Aquarium since its opening in 2012 has reached 30.

Jinbe is the first baby for both his parents, Happi (male) and Monaka (female). His father, Happi, was born at Sumida Aquarium in 2014 and was named to evoke the image of "energetic Tokyo." Similarly, Jinbe's name comes from the traditional Japanese garment called "jinbei," which has been loved and cherished since the Edo period. Another inspiration for the name came from the fact that when he pecked at the inside of the eggshell to crack it, it sounded like he was sticking out his tongue and making a "bee" sound. The name embodies the wish that Jinbe will grow up to be a beloved presence, just like the jinbei, which has been worn and cherished by everyone from adults to children for many years.

At our aquarium, we solicit name suggestions from our staff for newborn aquatic animals, and animal care staff selects the best name from among the candidates. We carefully consider the compatibility of the names with the parents and choose names that have a distinctly Japanese sound, hoping that many people will feel a sense of familiarity and affection for the animals as they grow up.

Jinbei is currently growing healthily in the back area under the care of the animal care staff. He has a hearty appetite, and his calls are getting stronger day by day. If his growth continues to be successful, he is scheduled to make his debut in the pool where the adult penguins stay sometime after July. We will be regularly posting updates on Jinbei's progress, including his journey to the pool and how he eats, on our official social media accounts.

Please watch over Jinbei as he grows and develops.

■ Details about Magellanic penguins chicks

Name: "Jinbei"

Parents: Happi (male), Monaka (female)

Spawning date: March 16th (Monday)

Hatching date: April 24th (Friday)

Weight: 95.0 grams (as of April 28)

Name origin: Like his father's name "Happi," the name comes from "Jinbei," a traditional Japanese garment that has been loved and cherished since the Edo period. It was also named because when he was pecking at the inside of an eggshell to crack it, it sounded like he was sticking out his tongue and making a "bee" sound.

Just like the jinbei, a traditional Japanese garment worn by people of all ages and loved for many years, we hope that this child will grow up to be someone who is loved by everyone. We hope that the child will grow up to be someone who inherits both the energetic spirit of Edo/Tokyo from the father, "Happi," and the unwavering loyalty of the mother, "Monaka."
