The names of the two newly unveiled baby green sea turtles have been decided as "Hoshi" (star) and "Sora" (sky).
At an unveiling ceremony for baby green sea turtles held on Saturday, September 19, 2026, Sumida Aquarium announced that the names of the two baby green sea turtles born in the Ogasawara Islands on Monday, July 13, 2026 have been decided as "Hoshi" (star) and "Sora" (sky). The two turtles are siblings, and their names were chosen by fifth-grade students at Ogasawara Elementary School in Ogasawara Village, based on the theme of "The charm of Ogasawara that we want to convey."
The night sky over the Ogasawara is so beautiful that it was selected as having the "most beautiful night sky in Japan" for two consecutive years in the "National Stargazing Network" conducted by the Ministry of the Environment in the past. Even the daytime sky is a clear blue.
The name was chosen with the hope that the two would grow up healthy and free, like the endless blue sky and the starry night sky, and return to their homeland, the Ogasawara Islands, in good health a year from now.
The two pygmy turtles entered the display tank at the "Ogasawara Base" on the 5th floor for the first time during the unveiling ceremony, and began swimming around energetically under the watchful eyes of many visitors. Visitors will be able to closely observe the growth process of these tiny babies, weighing 115g and 138g, over the next year.
Since its opening in 2012, Sumida Aquarium has been working in cooperation with Ogasawara Village in Tokyo to conserve green sea turtles. After carefully raising them for about a year until they are large enough to withstand predators, they are returned to their home sea. We hope that Hoshi and Sora, the two turtles entrusted to us this time, will also be able to return to the Ogasawara sea in good health, so please keep a warm eye on them.
