The relationships between the penguins have been updated to the latest version! "Sumida Penguin Relationship Chart 2025" has been released

Sumida Aquarium is pleased to announce that starting today, it will be releasing the "Sumida Penguin Relationship Chart 2025," which summarizes the personalities and relationships of penguins, on a special website. The chart will be on display in the aquarium from Wednesday, December 4, 2024.

The "Penguin Relationship Chart"*1 was created in 2018 with the aim of helping people learn about the ecology of penguins, which have personalities and sociality just like humans, and the diverse relationships between penguins and their caretakers that change from year to year. The information has been updated every year since then. This year marks the seventh update.
The behavior of the 56 Magellanic penguins living at Sumida Aquarium is observed daily by the aquarium staff, and large panels display the latest information on their personalities, changes in romantic relationships, etc. Going beyond a family tree showing the connections between parents and children and siblings, the exhibition also introduces each individual based on their appearance, personality, distinctive abilities and behaviors, and provides a unique relationship chart unique to Sumida Aquarium that clearly shows the relationships between the penguins, including the changes in friendships and couples, and includes the participation of the aquarium staff.
In addition to the relationship chart, you can also enjoy watching the penguins even more by using the web content "Pentagon"*2, which allows you to identify individual penguins by the color bands on their wings, and the "Favourite Penguin Diagnosis"*3, which allows you to find your favourite penguin by answering a few simple questions.
The 2025 relationship chart offers even more detailed information than last year, including the characteristics and behaviors of individual penguins, as well as the relationships between penguins that aquarium staff want you to know about. Wasshoi and Tsumugi, who had a frustrating relationship that was more than friends but less than lovers, have finally united, becoming the first couple born at Sumida Aquarium. In addition, the relationship between Bonbori and Daifuku, which is likely to develop into a romantic relationship in the future, has been added, and as penguins have been very active in love this year, the Penguin Cafe will be selling a limited-time menu item, "Sumipen in Love Hot Cocoa," inspired by Sumida Aquarium's penguins (Sumipen) in love.

1. "Sumida Penguin Relationship Chart 2025" website launch, museum exhibits and project overview

Based on daily observations by the zookeepers, the "Sumida Penguin Relationship Chart 2025" will be displayed in the aquarium and a special website will be launched. The chart compiles information on the relationships between penguins as parents and children, siblings, and spouses, as well as differences in personality, distinctive abilities and behaviors, and changes in romantic relationships. Every year, many comments are posted on social media about the diverse relationships, with comments such as "It's too complicated," "It's quite chaotic," and "I never get bored of watching it."

① First Sumida-born couple to be born: "Wasshoi" and "Tsumugi"
According to the 2022 Sumida Penguin Relationship Chart, the two had a frustrating relationship that was more than friends but less than lovers, but they have finally been seen mating and becoming a couple. "Wasshoi" is a male born in 2017 and "Tsumugi" is a female born in 2019, and this is the first time that two penguins born at Sumida Aquarium have become a couple. Please keep an eye on them.

② A relationship that is more than friends but less than lovers: "Bonbori" and "Daifuku"
Bonbori (male), born in 2021, and Daifuku (female), born in 2022, are penguins born at Sumida Aquarium. They are very close friends, sleeping together, preening each other's feathers, and chattering to each other, but they are not yet a couple. Keep an eye out for these two penguins, who may become a couple following Wasshoi and Tsumugi, both born at Sumida Aquarium.

3. Aloe is very popular among young penguins
Aloe has been a penguin at Sumida Aquarium since its opening in 2012, and he and his wife Cocoa have a son named Komari. Suddenly, Aloe's feathers have been groomed by young penguins. The penguins grooming Aloe are all penguins born at Sumida Aquarium since 2017: Wasshoi (male), Chochin (male), Kiriko (male), Ohagi (male), Bonbori (male), and Daifuku (female).
