This summer, Sumida Aquarium implemented the "Summer Independent Research Super Support System" for elementary school students.

Even though it's a fun summer vacation, homework is a bit of a burden.
Among them, there are probably many former children who struggled with their independent research projects.

"What should I do for independent research?"
"How free can we think about freedom?"

The " Summer Independent Research Super Support System" was born from the idea of addressing these children's concerns, helping them discover their genuine love and curiosity about animals, and working together on their independent research projects.

Children can choose what they like or are interested in from a variety of categories, such as "penguins," "jellyfish," and "animal care staff."
After that, we decided on the specific research theme and content through repeated meetings via email and phone.
On the day of the program, the children and animal care staff observed and experienced the original programs tailored to each research theme while discussing them together.

Measuring the speed of baby penguins,
Measuring the length of a green sea turtle,
Feel the touch of a jellyfish.

We would like to introduce the results of the "independent research" projects undertaken by elementary school students who have absorbed a variety of experiences and knowledge!

●I want to make a book about Spotted garden eel!

●What are the special features of pond turtles different from those of sea turtles? Why are they different?

●I want to learn everything about penguins! I want to meet my beloved Momoha!

●Are jellyfish hard or soft to the touch?

What is the difference between fur seals and seals? How do they sleep?

●Are there any differences between the four fur fur seals?

What do penguins eat? Where do they live?

●I want to know what a day in the life of a animal care staff is like! How do you take care of the penguins?

●I want to observe jellyfish and make my own original jellyfish!

●A detailed dissection of the grey nurse shark! What's the secret behind its fast swimming? What are its teeth like?

●I want to look at the Ogasawara Sea Life from above! I want to draw a picture of a jellyfish!

I want to know about a penguins's day! What do they do when we're at school? When do they take a bath?

●Aim to become a Spotted garden eel expert! I want to know more about Spotted garden eel!

What is the difference between fish and humans?

The question "What should I do to be free?" seems grandiose, but
"Freedom" is "doing what you like,"
If your "independent research" gave you an opportunity to think about what you "like," then I think you have accomplished your homework.

By participating in the "Summer Independent Research Super Support System," I was able to see and feel the animals directly, learn things I didn't know before, and interact with the animal care staff that the animals love.
We hope that by stimulating children's love for animals, they will come to love them even more, in line with Sumida Aquarium's concept of "getting closer, you will love them even more."

Thank you to all the elementary school students who participated!
Freedom is difficult even as an adult.

Sumida Aquarium hopes to continue to be a place that supports everyone's free thoughts and nurtures many of their passions.
We look forward to seeing you again at Sumida Aquarium!
